Amazon FBA Barcode Changes March 2026

Amazon FBA Barcode Changes March 2026: What Every UK Seller Must Know

If you're a reseller on Amazon UK, the barcode rules are changing — and the deadline is 31 March 2026.

Starting 31 March 2026, Amazon will require all resellers to apply Amazon barcodes (FNSKU labels) to every unit sent to FBA — even if the product already has a manufacturer barcode. This changes the inbound workflow for thousands of UK sellers.

Products that previously went straight into a fulfilment centre using the original barcode will now need to be individually labelled before shipping. In this guide, we explain what is changing, who is affected, and what your options are.

All information in this article is based on Amazon's official documentation: Use Amazon barcodes for FBA (G200141490).

⚠ Key Deadline: 31 March 2026
Resellers must use Amazon barcodes (FNSKU) for all FBA products. Brand owners enrolled in Brand Registry can continue using manufacturer barcodes.

What Exactly Is Changing?

Until now, if your product had a valid manufacturer barcode (UPC or EAN), you could send it to FBA without adding an Amazon label. From 31 March 2026, that option disappears for resellers.

In practice, this means every reseller must print FNSKU labels and apply them to each unit before sending inventory to Amazon.

Why Is Amazon Making This Change?

It comes down to inventory accuracy and commingling. When multiple sellers send the same product using the manufacturer barcode, those units get stored together. If one seller sends a counterfeit or damaged unit, it mixes with everyone else's stock — and any seller in that pool can have the bad unit shipped to their customer.

ℹ FNSKU vs Manufacturer Barcode: A manufacturer barcode says "this is Product X." An FNSKU says "this is Product X, sent by Seller Y." That distinction lets Amazon trace every unit back to the seller who sent it.

For brand owners, Amazon already has verification through Brand Registry. Resellers, who source from a wider range of suppliers, will now need individual labelling to maintain traceability.

What Happens If You Don't Comply?

Amazon is very clear about the consequences — and they are enforced consistently across UK fulfilment centres.

Inventory Refused or Disposed

Non-compliant shipments can be turned away, returned to you, or disposed of at your expense. Either way, you lose money and sales time.

Future Shipments Blocked

Repeated non-compliance can lead to Amazon blocking your ability to create new inbound shipments — effectively pausing your entire FBA business.

Unplanned Prep Fees

If a product arrives without an Amazon barcode, Amazon will label it and charge you an unplanned prep fee per unit. These fees add up fast.

Your Options: How to Prepare

You have three realistic paths forward.

Option A: Do It Yourself

Print FNSKU labels from Seller Central, buy a thermal printer and label stock, and apply them manually. Cheapest per unit, but time-consuming and risky if you make labelling errors.

Best for: Very low volume sellers (under 100 units/month).

Option B: Amazon's Label Service

Amazon applies FNSKU barcodes at the fulfilment centre for a per-unit fee. Convenient, but adds a direct cost and you still need to handle all other prep (polybagging, bundling, etc.) before shipping.

Best for: Sellers who want a quick fix and accept the per-unit cost.

Option C: Use a Professional Prep Center

A UK-based prep center handles everything: receiving your stock, inspecting it, applying FNSKU labels, covering existing barcodes, poly-bagging if needed, and shipping compliant inventory to Amazon.

Best for: Sellers who want to scale without worrying about compliance — and who value their time more than the cost of a label.

"The question is not whether you can afford a prep center. The question is whether you can afford a rejected shipment and a flagged account because of a labelling mistake."

What You Need to Do Before March 2026

  • Check your seller type — Are you a brand owner (Brand Registry) or a reseller? Only resellers are affected.
  • Audit your catalogue — Identify all products currently using manufacturer barcodes that will need FNSKU labels after the deadline.
  • Choose your labelling solution — DIY, Amazon's label service, or a prep center.
  • Test before the deadline — Send a small trial shipment with FNSKU labels in February or March to confirm compliance.
  • Monitor your Inbound Performance Dashboard — Check Seller Central for any defect reports related to labelling.
